So the other day when I had the truck up on ramps, I put the parking brake on and...something broke. The parking brake eventually released but the pedal is just dangling and my parking brake light flickers on and off.

I can push/pull the truck in neutral no issues, so I don’t think the parking brakes are stuck on...but if they are..even a little, how much damage am I doing by driving?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

Anyway, here’s some cleansing, stressful photos.

Wow, the condition of the frame has compelled me to go hug my pickup.

It’s not as bad as it looks in that photo....but yeah... 20 years in Edmonton

If you can roll the truck by hand in neutral, it’s not stuck on enough to be an issue

In actual seriousness, the parking brake pedal sounds like it has no tension whatsoever which is consistent with the dangling tidbits of that photo. I would look up anything I could do of where that bracket is supposed to mount and reattach with new hardware, then take apart the dust shields of the rear drums and adjust accordingly.

I know, right? It looks amazing for the age of the truck

I think my frame is the only thing that doesn't have rust on it. I could sell it on BaT in three years to save the 4x4s

I agree with this. Also parking break stuff for Chevy trucks is so cheap I just replace it all I imagine dodge is the same way.

The cable in the pic typically pulls on sprung cams inside the brake drum which then work on the shoes. There’s unlikely to be enough tension there now for it to do very much.

Looks like you’ve lost a couple of parts though...that yoke should be tucked up higher and it’s hard to imagine that’s all on the now clearly broken park brake cable...

If things did fall off, they’ve been gone for years. I never used the brake (ever) and I know it’s always looked like that.

I also would have heard/seen it fall on my polished floor

I’m no D odge expert, but b ased on the way the cable is dan gling in photo #1, I’m pretty sure you broke the cable or one of the connections. Just follow the cable from end to end and look for the part that should be attached but isn’ t. I doubt you are doing any damage driving the truck because the parking drum brake pads are spring loaded to retract. It’s the cable tension that forces them onto the drum, so slack cable means no parking  brake engaged.

If you never use it then...nothing is broken. Personally, though, I'd never be without the park brake. Especially since there was that one time that I was....
